                    PCD - Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia

APRIL 2013 - KENNEL CLUB ANNOUNCE NEW DNA TESTING SCHEME FOR THE OLD ENGLISH SHEEPDOG - CLICK HERE FOR PRESS RELEASE

Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) is an inherited abnormality affecting the cilia of the respiratory tract (cilia are the hair-like structures on the mucus membrane lining of the nose and lungs).  This results in recurrent respiratory tract infections.  Both the structure and the functionality of the cilia are affected, becoming uncoordinated and inefficient.  PCD has been reported in many breeds of dog, including the Old English Sheepdog.

The Old English Sheepdog are fortunate enough to be able to identify the mutant gene.  A simple cheek swab test can be carried out and tested.  Samping kits and testing is available from http://www.antagene.com/ in France.

The Old English Sheepdog Parent Club in the UK are compiling a database of tested dogs.  Please visit www.theoesclub.co.uk
